Ribel X5VA Cryogenic Ball Valves: Reliable Performance Down to -196 °C for Liquid Nitrogen Service

Handling cryogenic fluids is one of the most demanding applications in the industrial valve sector. Extremely low temperatures, severe mechanical stresses and the need to ensure tight shut-off require valves specifically engineered to operate safely and reliably under these challenging conditions.

To meet these requirements, Ribel has supplied X5VA three-piece split body trunnion mounted ball valves, specifically designed for liquid nitrogen service down to -196 °C, delivering maximum reliability, safety and long-term operational performance in critical cryogenic applications

Engineered for Cryogenic Service

Unlike conventional process applications, cryogenic systems require valves capable of maintaining their mechanical properties and sealing performance despite extreme thermal contraction. Every component must therefore be carefully designed and manufactured to compensate for dimensional changes caused by ultra-low temperatures, ensuring consistent performance throughout the valve’s service life.

The supplied solution features X5VA three-piece split body trunnion mounted ball valves with the following specifications:

  • DN 40 (1″1/2), ANSI Class 900
  • Body manufactured from ASTM A182/A479 F316/316L stainless steel, providing excellent toughness and corrosion resistance at cryogenic temperatures
  • Seats with PCTFE (Kel-F) inserts, selected for their outstanding dimensional stability and sealing performance in cryogenic service
  • Lipseal, PTFE and graphite sealing system, designed to ensure reliable tightness under severe operating conditions
  • Specifically engineered for liquid nitrogen service down to -196 °C

High-Performance Materials for Critical Applications

Material selection is a key factor in the reliability of cryogenic valves. The combination of F316/316L stainless steel with PCTFE (Kel-F) seat inserts ensures excellent mechanical integrity and sealing performance even at extremely low temperatures.

The trunnion mounted design also provides superior load distribution on the ball, reducing operating torque while enhancing sealing stability throughout the valve’s operating cycle.

This configuration delivers several important benefits:

  • Reliable operation in extreme cryogenic environments
  • Excellent sealing performance and process safety
  • Long service life of sealing components
  • Reduced maintenance requirements and increased plant availability
